Why Macronutrients Matter
Every food you eat is made up of some combination of three macronutrients: protein, carbohydrates, and fat. These are called "macro" nutrients because your body needs them in relatively large amounts — unlike vitamins and minerals, which are needed in much smaller quantities. Each macronutrient provides energy (measured in calories) and serves specific, irreplaceable functions in the body.
Despite what popular diets may suggest, no single macronutrient is inherently harmful. Demonizing carbs or fats while treating protein as a cure-all oversimplifies how nutrition actually works. Protein: The Body's Building Material
Protein is made up of amino acids — often described as the body's building blocks. It plays a central role in building and repairing muscle tissue, producing enzymes and hormones, supporting immune function, and transporting molecules through the bloodstream. During digestion, protein breaks down into individual amino acids that the body reassembles as needed.
There are 20 amino acids in total; nine are considered essential, meaning the body cannot produce them on its own and must get them through food. Animal proteins (meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy) contain all nine essential amino acids and are called complete proteins. A type of dietary fat found in plant oils, nuts, seeds, and fish. Research generally associates unsaturated fats with favorable cardiovascular outcomes compared to trans fats.
Dietary fiber
A type of carbohydrate the body cannot fully digest. Fiber supports digestive health, helps regulate blood sugar, and contributes to feelings of fullness.
Carbohydrates: Your Body's Preferred Fuel
Carbohydrates are the body's primary and most efficient energy source. When you eat carbs, they are broken down into glucose, which fuels your cells — including your brain, which relies almost entirely on glucose to function. Carbohydrates also play a role in gut health, through dietary fiber, and in mood regulation, through their influence on serotonin production.
Not all carbohydrates behave the same way. Complex carbohydrates — found in whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits — digest more slowly and provide sustained energy along with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Simple carbohydrates, such as added sugars in processed foods, digest quickly and offer little nutritional value beyond a fast energy spike. The difference matters: the type and quality of carbs you eat has more impact on your health than how many grams you consume in isolation.

Fat: Essential, Not the Enemy
Dietary fat has long been misunderstood. Fat is essential for absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K), protecting organs, maintaining cell membrane structure, regulating hormones, and supporting brain health. It also provides the most concentrated source of energy — 9 calories per gram compared with 4 calories per gram from protein or carbohydrates.
Like carbohydrates, the type of fat matters considerably. Unsaturated fats — found in olive oil, avocados, nuts, seeds, and fatty fish — are associated with heart health benefits in the broader body of research. Saturated fats, found in red meat and full-fat dairy, are generally recommended in moderation by most dietary guidelines. Trans fats, largely created through industrial hydrogenation, are widely considered harmful and have been significantly reduced from the food supply in the United States.
